TOsketchfest23 Review: Acuña Acuna & Cam Wyllie
Acuña Acuna is a sketch show based on performer Erick Acuña’s real life experience as a Peruvian Latino living in America. He uses sketches, songs, and some audience interaction to take us on a tour of his life, his experience after arriving in America, and the things that are important to him.
Erick has a great, personable energy on stage. His show is fun and informative, especially his sketch Eñe the Musical, where he explains the history and purpose of the eñe through parodies of various well-known musical theatre songs. Other sketches explore the subtle racism/exotification he experienced as an immigrant to America, as well as his love for Blink 182 and Chips Ahoy cookies.
Sketch comedian Cam Wyllie follows that up with a kaleidoscope of quirky characters, such as the bitter brother of Dominic Toretto of The Fast and The Furious, a karaoke DJ whose records were recently stolen, Diarrhea Man, and himself, Cam Wyllie, a guy who has definitely been to a party.
Cam is an engaging, high energy performer. His sketches go in unexpected, hilarious directions. While he may or may not have ever been to an actual party, his show is like a party in and of itself.
The Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival runs until March 19, 2023.
