Toronto Fringe Review: Rebel Bubbie, Inc.

Forget knitted scarves and baked goods—Rebel Bubbie serves up humour and botched cookies with gusto!

Bruria Cooperman, better known as Rebel Bubbie, takes centre stage at Alumnae Theatre, portraying herself as the unapologetic brat of her own life. In this hour-long show, Cooperman regales the audience with tales spanning from her adolescence to the antics of just last night. Despite the chronological leaps across days, years, and decades, Cooperman's storytelling remains clear, painting a vivid picture of her vivacious character. Director Eva Almos confirms that 99% of the content is autobiographical, leaving the remaining 1% delightfully mysterious.

While Rebel Bubbie delivers laughs aplenty, there are moments where the show's momentum wanes as it progresses. Cooperman's energy and wit are undeniable, yet the continuous hour-long format without a break may overwhelm some audience members. Introducing a brief intermission or trimming the runtime could enhance the overall impact of the performance. With such a dynamic performer at its helm, a slight structural tweak could elevate Rebel Bubbie, Inc. from an enjoyable romp to an unmissable theatrical gem.

With family in attendance, Rebel Bubbie strikes a hilariously intimate tone akin to a bubbie spilling family secrets. But make no mistake—this bubbie dishes out adult humour without reservation. Adult in language, content, and even age! Cooperman fearlessly tackles the trials of aging, serving up humourous cautionary tales to the youngins in the crowd.

Amidst the laughter, Cooperman maintains an Oscar-worthy straight face and deadpan delivery. Her impeccable comedic timing allows her to gracefully recover from any stumble, expected during this preview performance, the first of seven. Anticipate her nightly improvement, because if there's one thing Rebel Bubbie embodies, it's unwavering determination!

Buckle up for a rollercoaster ride filled with the drama and twists of a drag race, as Rebel Bubbie spins your grandparents' cherished tales with a rebellious flair!

Rebel Bubbie, Inc. is on now until July 13 as part of Toronto Fringe. Show times and tickets.
