Review: Canada's Drag Race, S2 E6 The Sinner's Ball
Each week Toronto based comedian Chris Middleton will review the latest episode of Canada’s Drag Race. Season two premiered October 14 on Crave.
As a noted sinner (aka, gay) and a fan of balls (aka, still gay), this episode was one of my favourites. While some of these girls have been rocky in other areas of the competition, this cohort of contestants have delivered some really strong runways. And I was shocked to see they brought back Scarlett Bobo to judge the-
…
I’m being told by my editors that it was still just Brooke Lynn Hytes… Well, I hope wherever Scarlett is, she’s sitting comfortably, knowing she probably would’ve won this challenge.
Just gonna skip to the end and say obviously we all knew Icesis was going to win this week. I mean, she’s consistently knocked out every look on the runway thus far. Of course, the ball challenge was just going to be another opportunity to showcase what she does best. Her first rock look was electric, her second look was the shit, and that last look had me gagged. Out of this strong group of queens, she’s always bringing something new and exciting on the runway.
Though, again, this was tough competition. Pythia was a very close second for me, as her overall witchy aesthetic has been so cohesive in everything she does. All her looks were so perfect and her last look was sick. Gia was also very strong, and that second gum look will be stuck in my head forever.
I actually loved Adriana this episode. Her Ugly as Sin runway was so well executed, and she really sold everything for me. Her final look was good… But comparatively, just a little underwhelming.
While she did not win, this was Kimora’s episode. It’s always been super clear she comes from the ballroom scene, because she can sell a runway. Her Tina Turner look was simply the best, and her final runway presentation really sold the envy. Her second look… I simply have no words. To take this runway category and use it to make such a powerful statement was incredible to see.
The bottom two queens were, comparatively, pretty obvious. Kendall is a super polished queen, but the concepts weren’t very strong. I liked the idea of the last look, I think that the cape being the same colour as her dress diminished the silhouette she was trying to create. Her rocker was the standout, but her second look was a little ruffled.
Synthia is, again, very beautiful queen who can put together an outfit. But none of them were giving a look, if that makes sense. The fact that Icesis gave her greed and she just did a rich lady look was such a missed opportunity and very first thought. There’s so much potential there and she was just a lady I’d hate to serve at Hudson’s Bay.
Her first look was a little underwhelming, and her second look was just confusing. Synthia is very beautiful, and has great outfits. There’s just something missing each time she walks down the runway that leaves me wanting more from her. But as she said, the third lip sync is the Kiss of Death in Drag Race, and unfortunately, it was her time for seven minutes in heaven.
I had very little doubt that this ball was going to be a flop. These queens came with looks, and it’s only going to get better from here on out, I’m sure. The roast challenge, however… is a problem I’ll deal with next week.
There’s no shortage of truly hysterical stories throughout this special.
