Gay AF at Just for Laughs Toronto
Robert Watson’s Gay AF Comedy showcase at Just For Laughs Toronto was a microcosm of everything wonderful you saw at the fest this year: Big laughs, diverse voices, and excellent drag. As excited chatter filled the room at Nothing Fancy in Kensington Market, one thing was apparent: Toronto’s queer community and its allies crave nights like these.
Now, before we go any further, a quick aside: As a comedian, I have worked with Robert Watson in the past. So I may be a touch biased. But, based on the uproarious laughs and gushing comments I heard throughout the crowd, I’m confident my positive feedback is appropriate.
As a host, Watson makes his audience feel right at home. It’s a warm welcome with just enough naughty to break the ice. Between acts, he engaged the crowd with a running total of how many comedians said the “c-word,” (not that one, the other one. Think verb.), which turned out to be most of them.
But, even with all the c-wording, the show was far from one note. Each act on Watson’s lineup brought a different perspective to the stage, making for a refreshing lack of overlap in the material.
As an audience, we enjoyed…
A fun way to pass the time between Uber Eats deliveries from Heather Mariko.
A sexy shift at Starbucks with Bobbi Summers.
Tamara Shevon’s less than ideal birthday gift.
A trip to Pound Town with Hillary Yaas.
Some new film ideas with Ajahnis Charley.
A swing on Martha Chaves’ private trapeze.
In short, Gay AF at JFL Toronto was a joyful event with a little something for everyone. And, if you missed it, here’s some good news: All of these acts live and work in Toronto. Some more good news: Watson produces shows all year round in a variety of local venues. So, while a fancy festival is nice- you don’t need one to go out and get Gay AF.
There’s no shortage of truly hysterical stories throughout this special.
