Album Review: Tomato/Tomato, It'll Come Around

New Brunswick couple John and Lisa McLaggan had a few close calls this year regarding this album. According to their website they just got across the border after recording in Nashville before the pandemic restrictions hit, then had to find a way to complete the album with no touring cash to help out. A very successful Kickstarter funding page later they're closing out 2020 with a gorgeous little effort reminiscent of Buddy and Julie Miller.

The album is a bit of country, some fine soul, a pinch of rockabilly and a whole lot of fun. Whether it's Lisa's earnest performance on "Chasing Rainbows" or the cavity-inducing harmonies on the title track, Tomato/Tomato are ripe for bigger and better things. Both are capable of dazzling but the chemistry between the two makes for some magical moments like the soulful "Better At Leaving."

Tomato/Tomato's knack for simple, catchy ear-candy is apparent on the bubbly combination of "Kicking And Screaming" and "Make A Change" which sounds like Nick Lowe-by-numbers. Toss in a Buddy Holly cover and what's not to like? Despite some hiccups outside of their control, It'll Come Around is worth the wait. Hopefully 2021 sees them taking it on the road.
