Album Review: Jimmie Allen, Tulip Drive
For his third studio effort, country sensation Jimmie Allen reflected on his high school and college years as well as the wisdom garnered from his grandma. And while there's a few standout efforts throughout, the radio-friendly, singles-heavy approach has Allen's career blossoming to another level.
Of course the single "be alright" hits the mark, while the breezy "what I'm talkin bout" comes off too glossy. This is especially true of the upbeat "keep em coming" but for the most part Allen excels on the 53-minute album. The summery "kissin you" is another setlist staple while "wouldn't feel like summer" is a warm, inviting toe-tapper.
Although at 17 songs it might be a bit longer than some would expect, but Allen changes things up with the Latin-sprinkled "pesos" featuring T-Pain and CeeLo Green which comes out of left field. Meanwhile Jennifer Lopez (yes, that Jennifer Lopez) appears on a better-than-anticipated lullaby "on my way." The highlight here, other than "get you a girl," is the poignant piano-soaked "habits & hearts" which hits a nerve on so many levels.
Had the effort been a tad leaner it might have paid off better but as it stands Tulip Drive generally smells like roses.
