Album Review: Jim Jacobs, That's The Way It Goes
On his debut album, Jim Jacobs thanks both his parents foremost for all the love and support over the years. And for the resident of Smoothtown on the Six Nations grounds in Ontario, Jacobs is hoping he's done his parents proud with a debut album soaked in traditional country foundations like Waylon, Conway, George and Willie. If you need proof just listen to "I Just Can't Quit Loving You" that hits the framework of those icons mentioned.
Jacobs hits the ground running on the surefire "Good Ole Country Boy" that could've fallen off a Travis Tritt, George Strait or Alan Jackson album. And thankfully it's a style that comes naturally to Jacobs given the sweet heartache felt on "Over For Good" with its lap steel accents. It's not forced, just innate. Fortunately, the musician throws a curve ball with a saxophone propelling a stellar "Drinkin' Again" that shines.
Although there are a few honky-tonk, beer-raising tunes, it's the slower material Jacobs nails beautifully, especially "She's Everything" that brings to mind Ronnie Milsap. Another standout is "I'm Tired Of Being Something" which should be a country radio staple. Overall, it's an excellent old-school album that listeners won't soon forget.
