Album Review: HUNKS, Mouth Beef
HUNKS are a Winnipeg comedy powerhouse, and their newest live sketch comedy album, Mouth Beef, is a prime example of the appeal this group holds. It’s a charming romp through their crude and absurd sketch style; filled with enough dick jokes to satisfy the immature teen in all of us.
While HUNKS’ sharp writing is in full effect on this album, their core strength as a group is their performance. The amount of assonance on Wrong Rom Ron is astounding, but Nothing Bad Happens Behind A Door is by far the most emblematic track to exemplify HUNKS’ comedy style. It’s a wild sonic ride through with an outlandish narrative. It also consists of real foley effects, which we should note as being a brave touch for an album where we might not have otherwise noticed. Their ability to translate the energy they bring to a live show with this album is a testament to this group’s polish.
HUNKS sprinkle a few runners throughout their album. From the various spin offs of Master Chef to fixing their problems through a positive mindset; these tracks provide nice through-lines that add a lot of cohesion to the album while maintaining their trademark silliness.
Mouth Beef is a lively spin through the wistful ideas and clever writings of HUNKS. The only complaint is that they really all are a bunch of hunks, so it’s a shame this is only an audio recording.
Mouth Beef was released April 1, 2021.
