Album Review: Carol Zoccoli, Legal
Carol Zoccoli is a totally unique comedy import. A rare dynamic treasure from a scorching region of Brazil.
Her talent and delivery is interchangeable with no one. To see Zoccoli grab the mic at a sleepy comedy show it was instantly transformed into a weapon of truth.
Seizing its full power in her pint sized hands, all her laughs were served with a large hungry portion of healthy sexy fear...the type that invigorates, reminds an audience they are living.
Zoccoli’s debut album Legal perfectly encapsulates the energy and craftsmanship of her live performances. Legal is such a tightly curated body of work it almost plays like the audio to a one woman show. The subject matter is singular, her identity as a Brazilian immigrant in Canada.
It is a solid hour of stand up, and the most impressive quality therein is just how accessible the jokes are in their structure. It is a story of the exaggerated version of Zoccoli, who came to a Country that, at its best, is safe, and at worst, is bland, expensive and racist.
The material turns blue at moments but never hacky; rather it’s a welcome uncomplicated universality to poop jokes and marital farts.
There is a track dedicated entirely to the intergenerational legacy of being a bitch that is deeply hilarious, complex and almost untouchable. Zoccoli knows how to keep control of her audience and therefore gets laughs out of premises of violent fantasies that others would dare not tread.
It was hers to live therefore it is hers to make light. Legal is a very enjoyable album...organic, vibrant, honest. A welcome dash of heat from a performer who proves crazy beats big both in street fighting and comedy.
Legal was released January 13, 2022 on Comedy Records.
