Album Review: Ana-Marija Stojic, In My Head
The potpourri of overlaying intrusive thoughts that start off Ana-Marija Stojic’s In My Head may be familiar to many a listener. It’s apropos to the title of the album, as the audience is invited inside of Stojic’s head, complete with the many layered thoughts that float around in it.
This album is a unique blend of stand-up comedy, music played by Stojic on ukelele and keyboard, and live sketches (complete with voiceovers), all of which make a larger and humorous commentary about various aspects of life. There’s a certain flow to the switch in format that keeps the listener engaged and entertained throughout.
The melange of mental health musings, a completely normal song about a recently devil-possessed woman setting up a dating profile (track 6), conspiracy theorists and field trips (track 22), an advertisement for an OCD edition of a sound recognition toy (track 4), the perfect description of anxiety through a hilarious mock movie trailer (track 19), songs about polyamory and escape rooms of love (track 9) and dead hamster thoughts popping up during sex (track 3) are just some of what make this album very distinctive in its humour.
In My Head is a stand-alone album that stands out for all the right reasons and will have you glad to have spent some time inside the mind of Stojic.
In My Head was released December 2, 2022 on Comedy Records.
