Album Review: Carla Collins, PandEPIC!
On Pandepic!, the latest album from comedian, actress, television and radio host Carla Collins, it’s clear she knows her way around the stage. She’s been in the television world since 1990 and seems bulletproof as a result. Nothing, not even a fire alarm going off in the middle of her set, can phase her.
When most people go looking for a night of stand-up comedy, this is the kind of snappy, loveably naughty persona they hope to see. Collins is poised and happy to deliver, serving up one-liners and spontaneous quips like they’re on tap. And she’s full of her own unique surprises.
Track #10, What’s Your Sign, Karen?, is a highlight. She offers an astrological alternative to hate speech, spits out rapid-fire puns and gives a loving shout-out to her late mother in a cool 2 minutes and 55 seconds.
The material on Pandepic! covers a wide range of subject matter, from dating older men to social politics and over to Jodie Foster. Collins maintains her distinct comedic voice through it all: A shot of Joan Rivers meets a dirty-mouthed Dolly Parton, with a pinch of Rodney Dangerfield.
Pandepic! was released April 9, 2021.
