Review: The Reklaws, Sophomore Slump
Jenna and Stuart Walker made huge inroads with their impressive debut Freshman Year in 2019. Now just 14 months later the brother and sister duo known as The Reklaws have returned with Sophomore Slump hoping to avoid the dreaded, well, you know . . .
For the most part the problem is averted thanks to some pop-polished country that recalls Lady A on "Not Gonna Not" and the punchy, radio-friendly "You Problem" which glides effortlessly. Unfortunately, "Got Me Missing" starts slowly and where one expects a big chorus just finds the song set on cruise control. Thankfully Stuart's performance on "So Crazy It Just Might Work" works from the onset, possibly being the album's centrepiece. A close second is "Karma," a humorous, simple but punchy ditty that will shine in concert.
Although a 12-track record, the album includes a quick "Gramps' Intro" as well as two versions of "Where I'm From." The first rendition has an atmospheric feel to it that grows on the listener while "Where I'm From (Acoustic Version)" is a far warmer, earthy performance that wins over the listener much quicker. And "Beer Can" is a rowdier, fun-loving party-starter. Gramps would definitely be proud of these sophomores and the album.
Sophomore Slump was released October 16, 2020 on Universal Music Canada.
