Review: Robert Connely Farr, Country Supper
Robert Connely Farr has made a name for himself in Canadian blues circles with strong performances and albums. This latest release is his third this year following a rarities package entitled Gasoline and a subsequent Live In EastVan record in July. And the third time is the charm with a barroom filled with swampy, Delta-soaked blues that slowly creep and crawl into your veins. In a good way!
While compared to everyone from Springsteen to Gregg Allman, Farr could be the lovechild of Gary Clark Jr. and Steve Earle on the powerful "Girl In The Holler" and groovy "Cadillac Problems." It's his roots-y, bluesy pipes on the fantastic trio of "Lately," "Catfish" and "Water's Rising" which seals the deal.
Part of the album's attraction is Farr isn't held prisoner to length, whether stopping some of the gems like "If It Was Up To Me" a hair too short or easing his way into keepers such as "Can't Be Satisfied" and "Train Train." The highlight of the enthralling 16-track affair is "Bad Bad Feeling (with Ben Yardley)" whose guitar soars despite the ominous lyrical content. A fine fixing of material from a criminally underrated West Coast blues belter! Year-end lists await!
