Review: Corb Lund, Agricultural Tragic

I can count on one hand the times in my life I’ve actually touched a horse, but listening to a Corb Lund record makes me honestly feel like I could hack it as an Albertan ranch hand. As a songwriter, Lund’s greatest gift is his ability to make something hyper-specific feel universal, and that is once again on full display in Agricultural Tragic.

Agricultural Tragic gives you everything you want from a Corb Lund album and more. 90 Seconds Of Your Time shows off his great storytelling. Raining Horses is one of his best horse songs to date - and this is a man with a lot of horse songs! Tracks like Louis L’Amour and Old Men are great melancholic looks at changing rural life, while Dance With Your Spurs On and Ranchin’, Ridin, Romance (Two Out Of Three Ain’ Bad) show off the fun side of down-home living.

While Lund is much more than a drinking song writer, no one would blame you for feeling a little ripped off if you didn’t get at least one. Well, not to worry! I Think You Oughta Try Whiskey is an absolute banger. I can see this song becoming a sloppy karaoke night mainstay.

Agricultural Tragic is a confident collection of songs by a man who knows his strengths and exactly how to play to them.
