Review: Adrienne Fish, Adrienne For Mayor
Adrienne For Mayor, the debut album from this Toronto-based comedian, is more fun than a bag of dicks. And easier to enjoy on the subway. Remember all those party boy stoner comedies from the 90s? This album is fun in the same way, but smarter with better cover art and political views.
In terms of writing, Fish’s style is loose and conversational. Bursting with stage presence, her enthusiastic delivery is infectious. She charms the audience with dirty anecdotes, wild tales of misadventure, and some relatable thoughts on politics. She’s so charming, in fact, her comedy recently caught the attention of Ruby Rose on Tik Tok. Which, I’m pretty sure, makes her royalty in some circles.
Fish sparkles in off the cuff moments between her jokes, the kind of reactions and riffs that show you she’s having a great time up there. This is the type of performer who seems like a cool hang. You’re half giggling along, half hoping you might end up partying together after the show. And something in her friendly delivery makes you think you could at least share a joint in the parking lot.
Adrienne For Mayor is fun, engaging, and may teach you a new use for coconut oil. In the election for uplifting distractions in uncertain times, it’s got my vote.
Adrienne For Mayor was released September 4, 2020 on Comedy Records.
