Call Me Mother Season 1 Wrap Up
I don’t want to sound like a broken record, but after watching the full season of Call Me Mother, I stand as firm as ever on all the praise I’ve been giving it thus far. It’s a refreshing respite from the Drag Race dominated culture and it’s carved out a space for itself as a top-tier show.
First off, congratulations to our first child of drag, Toddy! Honestly, all the artists in the top three could’ve taken this title. But, if we’re going off full season performance plus finale, Toddy’s overall track record speaks for itself.
Not only was House of Dulcet a power house group every week, Toddy truly shone in every challenge and presented such versatility in their drag artistry. All their looks for each runway — from the Frankenstein boy scout to the Into The Woods witch to the stained coffee look — were uniquely Toddy. There was always a concept and character every time they stepped onto the runway, and they took on each challenge with a clear, original vision.
With one of the most supportive, positive energies and some of the best confessionals of the season, this big clown toddler winning feels right. I just hope Toddy’s sharing some of that prize money with Felicia Bonée, because she took one for the team!
While the winner has been crowned, I hope all the drag artists are super proud of what they put on the show. From our incomparable first out, Ella Lamoureux, to the BollyHood queen, Sanjina DaBish Queen, every artist made this show one of the most enjoyable drag competitions shows out there. Even though you were separated into houses, the comradery you all had for each other and the support you’ve all demonstrated was really touching. You’re all winners!
The artists were definitely the stars, but the supporting players all helped elevate this show to its fullest potential. The hard work of the salon crew should not go unnoticed. Lunicda Miu and Connor McCalden always turn out amazing looks, and I’m glad Connor finally got his name recognition. But seriously, the unsung hero of this episode was WigZaddy for Kiki’s performance hair alone.
Dallas Dixon was charming and witty throughout the season. His hosting always helped the show flow seamlessly and he did a stellar job injecting personality into every moment on screen. It was also incredible seeing Farra N Hytes as a drag auntie throughout this entire process. Not only did she give some of the most thoughtful critiques, but was also a supportive choreographer who always met the artists at their performance level while still delivering grand choreography.
Peppermint, Crystal and Barbada were all selling points for this show, and these three mothers delivered on all the looks and mentorship we were promised. They pushed all the artists each episode with kindness, and it resulted in some stellar drag being presented. Yes, Peppermint is now officially the Mother of the Year, all these mothers deserve their flowers.
As season one comes to a close, Call Me Mother has solidified itself as something unique. The presence of this show, and it’s ability to showcase all the varying types of drag aesthetics out there. It’s really heartening to see drag in such a welcoming environment, and my hope is that this show continues to showcase and celebrate varying styles of drag.
My only question is, season two when???
