Album Review: Robert Watson, Homo Says What?
A Mormon and a gay man walk into a bar. The bartender says, “hey, is that Robert Watson?”
Homo Say What? is the first comedy album from Toronto’s favourite proud gay man. Instantly likeable, infectiously energetic, and delightfully self-referential, Watson’s debut directs his unique brand of snark on the treasured institutions of Christianity, marriage, and Debra Messing. All the while, Watson targets his observations with an underlying message of acceptance and self-love.
At its core, Homo Say What? is the story of a gay stereotype targeting gay stereotypes. As a gay Mormon who has overcome his fair share of adversity, Watson laments the casually homophobic world that served his plucky spirit so well. In a society of increasing diversity and socio-political awareness, are there any safe spaces for the humble white gay man?
Incorporating life lessons from stories of losing his virginity to a Cher impersonator, engaging in twitter battles with celebrities, and the woes of keeping up with Facebook birthday wishes, Watson’s album gives the listener an unapologetic view into the tragic world of a barely-marginalized white gay man with plenty of fight left but nowhere to put it.
Homo Says What? was released January 27, 2023.
