Album Review: Miko Marks, Feels Like Going Home
It's been roughly 18 months since Miko Marks' breakthrough album Our Country made headway, headlines and heads turn. Now Marks is hoping to ride that career-altering momentum with her latest effort. It's hard to capture the lightning in a bottle Marks created with her last album, yet it's a solid step in that direction. Just listen to the Aretha-esque "Peace Of Mind" and that point is driven home.
Soulful almost to a fault, Marks comes out swinging her gospel-tinged chops on the title track with some swampy Southern charm. Meanwhile citing the record mecca of Muscle Shoals doesn't hurt on the graceful "One More Night," oozing from beginning to end that enigmatic flavour the studio had.
Marks goes to that same musical well often over the 11 songs, particularly with the ballad-belting "This Time" that showcases her voice accompanied over a distant but delicious country melody. But the eye-opener here is the rollicking, politically-charged "Trouble" which should definitely touch a nerve. Just as uplifting as the quasi-hymnal "Lay Your Burdens Down" is "Deliver Me" which doesn't reinvent the wheel but has Marks putting a choir-soaked oomph in some portions.
Miko Marks continues to break new ground with old-fashioned, heart-tugging jewels.
