Album Review: Lianne Mauladin, Late For The Party

Lianne Mauladin is a friendly fixture on the Canadian scene. She’s well known in the comedy world, not only as a great comic but an excellent producer. It’s nice to see a debut album from someone who’s put in the hours, built up their name, and poised themselves for international exposure.

“Late For The Party” is a perfect title for this collection of anecdotes, many of which have to do with age and generation gaps. In a time when digging up old tweets has become a hobby for some, Mauladin reminds us of our not-so-distant politically incorrect past. Check out the track “That Didn’t Age Well” for some insight about Mr. T’s claim to fame, for example.

Eternally tongue in cheek, Mauladin does a tightrope walk with her writing. “Millenial Women” strikes a nice balance between admiring the progression of feminism and inviting listeners to lighten up. Some side comments may have modern audiences doing a double-take, but she’ll win them back with the next one.

Mauladin released this album for her 50th birthday, and there’s a lot to celebrate. She’s a loveable firecracker with a “take me or leave me” attitude and a lot of fun stories. Mainly, she’s a performer who knows and is comfortable with herself, which makes her a breeze to listen to.
