Album Review: Jackson Hollow, Roses
While calling British Columbia home, Canadian bluegrass newcomers Jackson Hollow have made impressive inroads south of the border. The quartet, led by singer Tianna Lefebvre and multi-instrumentalist Mike Sanyshyn, performed at a 2021 International Bluegrass Music Association showcase. That helped them land a deal with Virginia-based label Mountain Fever Records for this debut. And if well-crafted toe-tappers like "Put Yourself In My Place" which bring an early version of Alison Krauss and Union Station to mind is measuring stick, this will be your new favourite.
The record has several high points, including the genteel "Shallow Rivers" which oozes roots and a stripped-down ballad entitled "Heartache In The Works." "I'm All The Way Gone" with its plucky banjo and sweet mandolin work shines while Lefebrve sings about chasing a sunset. Meanwhile the record has a few rollicking moments with the frantic "Can't Stop Now (In Memory Of Mike Norman)."
A delectable heartache tale "Look Who's Talking Now" hits the homestretch perfectly. And the choice of covers is strong, with the title track having sweet harmonies rounded out by Charlie Frie on upright bass and guitarist Eric Reed. In short and on the whole Jackson Hollow comes up smelling like...well...you know.
Roses was released March 10, 2023 on Mountain Fever Records.
