Album Review: Emily Misura, Trigger Warning
Comedian and musician Emily Misura ventures into the Free Speech culture war but never clearly knows where she stands. Trigger Warning is an album that is daring someone to cancel them, but isn’t saying anything radical enough to warrant it.
Sonically, this is probably the most beautiful comedy album I’ve ever listened to. From its lushly mixed orchestration to its thumping bass. Lyrically, however, Misura is the comedic equivalent of a cartoon character smashing the cymbals over your head. There are a lot of laughs to be found and Misura is a smart comic. Unfortunately, the first part of the album is so wrapped up in a strawman argument that only feels relevant to someone on the front lines of Reddit arguing for a dopamine hit.
The second half of the album is where Misura shines. ‘Socialize Me, Daddy” an incredibly catchy dance track that takes on the American Healthcare system is incredibly grim and pointed, but infinitely danceable. That track is second only to “Opulence Osteen” which is a diss track aimed at mega-church pastor Joel Osteen. She raps venom over one of my favourite beats of the year.
Trigger Warning was released April 20, 2022.
