Album Review: Gavin Stephens, All Inclusive Coma
Gavin Stephens has returned with his fourth album All Inclusive Coma proving why his comedy is viewed in high esteem. Gavin takes us on a journey of what getting older feels like in a raw, yet endearing way.
Coming to terms with his 40s, Gavin expresses how everything starts to have different meaning around him whether he likes it or not, making the listener start to evaluate their own process of aging. His hilarious take on what it must feel like to be a millennial in 2020 is a definite highlight of the album and his ability to make current issues so light and digestible reminds us of why comedy is such a necessary outlet to having during difficult times.
Gavin bounces back and forth between polished and refined bits to quick and witty crowd work so flawlessly that you feel like you are at his album recording in real time. The track “HR” is the perfect example of the weaving between banter with the audience and perfectly executed punchlines.
The album has a refreshing number of Canadian references, yet they are presented in a way where you could be from anywhere in the world and still be able to understand and laugh along with the jokes. With a total run time of 45 minutes, All Inclusive Coma is a perfect way to pass some time during quarantine, laughing out loud alone in your room.
All Inclusive Coma was released December 4, 2020 on Howl & Roar Records.
