Album Review: Dave Merheje, Miseducation of a F**kboi

Adding to a legacy of accolades spanning more than a decade, Dave Merheje returns to his roots in his latest album, Miseducation of a F**kboi. Recorded at The Corner Comedy Club in Toronto, Merheje is back home for a victory lap.

In the follow up to his 2019 Juno Award winning debut, Good Friend Bad Grammar, the seasoned comic steps away from his signature crowd work style, allowing himself instead to embrace the vibe of an old friend returning home to tell you what he’s been up to lately. The result is an album that is infectiously conversational, never wasting a second as Merheje comes to terms with his aging self by reflecting on past heartbreak and sexual exploits.

To set the tone of the album, Merheje opens with a monologue about getting old - feeling out of place at rap concerts, discovering New Balance shoes, and finding a good winter coat. He then reminisces on his exes, and how they are all inexplicably doing well.

A highlight of this special, I Got Robbed is a story of being awkwardly held up by an inexperienced mugger, and the fragility of courage in the face of danger. After which, Merheje explores his sexual legacy through (arguably too many) proselytizing accounts of dry humping.

If you are a fan of Merheje, Miseducation of a F**kboi may not be as overtly funny as his 2019 release, but it is smarter and more insightful, and still well worth a listen. And if you aren’t familiar with Merheje, this album is certainly worth your time, as even a mellow album from Merheje would still be better than most.

Miseducation of a F**kboi was released January 26, 2023.
