Review: Matt Wright, Existing is Exhausting

There are complex commonalities in our lives as Canadians, and Matt Wright’s Existing is Exhausting taps into this existential cultural identity that the country itself often struggles to define. Maybe it comes from the sincerity in his persona or maybe it’s from living in his own Newfoundland and Labrador time zone, but Wright brilliantly exemplifies and articulates the mind set of the average Canadian.

An East Coaster with befuddled charm, Wrights’s goofy observations are lined with pops of quick wit that pick up the album just as it dips. Maintaining a spry energy underlined with a fizz of anxiety, Wright presents a certain earnestness that most comics struggle to keep alive in their own careers. The tracks I Hate It Here and Glad You’re Here best highlight Wright’s comedic prowess, showing off his ability to paint vivid scenarios and thrive in off-the-cuff moments.

With Existing is Exhausting, Wright captures the voice of the ideal dopey Canadian everyman with an added layer of thoughtful perspective. With joke topics ranging from Hockey Night in Canada to dentists’ small talk, Wright’s uncomplicated approach to a family friendly comedy sensibility is crafted with a certain Canadian collective experiences in mind.
