Review: Kevin Getz, On Air
Kevin Getz’s On Air cuts together Getz’s favourite moments as a Radio DJ from 102.1 the Edge over the past year around contextualizing narration. Any skepticisms comedy purists have with this idea will be surprised at Getz’s understanding and ability to maintain the humour in these moments removed from the artifice of radio.
The album is a mixture of comedic styles, mixing reactionary sketch comedy akin to rye pranks in Dentists with segments of observational humour in Orange Juice and Furnished Apartments. Though the album shines through in the rare bits that are only achieved through live radio.
On Air maintains a vulnerability difficult to capture with traditional stand up. Tracks like Reruns, Contests, and Lucky Loonie get a dash of humanity to the comedy at play from the inclusion of the radio call-ins. It facilitates a particular experience similar to a live comedy show.
The album also includes bits crafted during the COVID-19 era, with tracks like Favourites and Tickets to Nothing. They glean and encapsulate moments of positivity during these bleak times, and go towards boasting Getz’s abilities as a comedy writer.
Surprisingly unique and well executed, On Air is perfect listening for those missing their morning commutes, and is a testament to the craft of Radio DJing.
Kevin Getz’s On Air was released August 27, 2020.
