Review: Dylan Gott, Dr. Plops

Dylan Gott’s latest album Dr. Plops is thoroughly enjoyable. Gott is Canadian born but spent a few years honing his craft on the stages of England.

The precision and pacing so often found in British stand up keeps the material focused and punctuated with laughter.

While the subject matter being mostly focused on satirizing pretension in every day characters is a quality that is very home grown. Vapers, Lovers and aging Warriors are all subject to Gott’s wit that is unassuming but knows exactly what he’s up to.

It is this quality that allows Dr. Plops to pivot into the latter half of the material that is not at all PG, but has a delivery that feels like it should be.

Dylan Gott does air a lot of his wife’s personal life out on the album. So if that style of comedy is not your vegan Oreo then so be it. She seems cool and it comes from a place of love and writing what you know.

There is a very strong bit about Pro Wrestling that takes aim at both fans and snobs. This furthers the saga of stands up and their affinity for the singlet clad sweaty sport. That bit alone is worth listening to the album.

Dylan Gott’s unassuming analogies make Dr. Plops a surgically precise, and clear blue record.

Dr. Plops was released June 4, 2020.
