Last night Impro Montréal / Montreal Improv announced it will permanently cease operations after 12 years in business. In the few short hours since the announcement many memories have been shared on social media from improvisers across North America.

“It is with great sadness that we announce today that Montreal Improv will be permanently ceasing its operations. Despite our best efforts to navigate the effects, restrictions and uncertainties resulting from the current COVID-19 health crisis, we were unable to develop a realistic plan to place the theatre on a viable economic footing for the future. “

In 2008 Montreal Improv began teaching comedy classes and built a school with regular weekly classes and workshops. In 2010 their theatre was opened on St-Laurent Boulevard, followed by Le P'tit Impro. These venues hosted both English and French shows on a weekly basis, and was also a popular hub for Festivals including Just For Laughs and Montreal Sketchfest.

At some point in the future, the conditions will be right for a new organization to fill the void created by Montreal Improv’s closure. We look forward to that day.

This is a major loss for the Montreal comedy community, and the North American improv community as a whole. The full statement can be read at www.montrealimprov.com.
