Review: Nick Nemeroff, The Pursuit of Comedy Has Ruined My Life

On The Pursuit of Comedy Has Ruined My Life, Nick Nemeroff returns home to Toronto from Los Angeles to record his debut album at The Ossington.

His comedy is not for everyone, and that's what's great about it. For every one person who furrows their brow at the absurdity of him, there are five more who have been waiting for a comic like Nemeroff.

The 51-minute album is an exciting blend of old school misdirects and modern oddities.

Nemeroff can write a whip-smart punchline about anything. From kittens to penis size, and even Hitler gets a turn. As a performer, he has mastered the art of lingering in some areas and quickly glancing over others. He is the antidote to comics who say they "can't make jokes about anything anymore." Nemeroff proves you can, you just have to be clever about it.

While his comedy isn’t necessarily conversational in tone, Nemeroff engages with his audience in his own way. He shows off his playful side in spontaneous moments and some creative crowd work.

Entertaining and surprising from start to finish, let’s hope Nemeroff continues ruining his life for a lot longer.

The Pursuit of Comedy Has Ruined My Life was released April 27, 2020.
